Hatono Misaki is a cape facing the Genkai Sea, located in Chinsei-cho, Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture.
It claims to be the northwesternmost point of the Japanese mainland, offering a panoramic view to the northwest where you can watch the sun set and rise over the horizon.
Hatono Misaki has long been a place of worship, where people prayed for the safe passage of seafarers. At the tip of the cape stands the Hatono Misaki Lighthouse, an unmanned lighthouse, and the Misaki Shrine, said to protect the lighthouse.
Hatono Misaki is also known for its abundant natural beauty. The surrounding area features beaches, campsites, and fishing spots, allowing for various activities.
In particular, the Karatsu City Genkai Underwater Observatory, the only underwater observatory on the Sea of Japan side, is a popular tourist spot at Hatono Misaki. From the observatory, you can observe the seabed at a depth of 7 meters. You can see about 30 kinds of fish swimming, such as black porgy, filefish, and yellowtail fusiliers, as well as seaweed like Ecklonia cava and Sargassum, and shellfish.
The waters around Hatono Misaki were designated as part of a national park in 1970, becoming Japan's first underwater park. The clear water is ideal for diving and snorkeling.
Hatono Misaki is a fascinating tourist spot where you can experience breathtaking scenery, abundant nature, and history. Be sure to visit!
