Nanatsugama of Yakataishi is a sea cave in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, characterized by its striking columnar joints of basalt. Formed approximately 25,000 years ago by lava flows from Noborio (Noborio South Volcano), one of the Izu Eastern Volcanic Group, flowing into a valley, six of the seven waterfalls (excluding Ebitaki) showcase these columnar joints, created by the cooling and contraction of thick solidified lava.
As its name suggests, Nanatsugama features seven caves in a row, with the largest accessible by sightseeing boat. Weather permitting, you can experience the mystical interior of the cave by boat.
A grassy area sits atop the caves, complete with an observation deck and walking paths. From the observation deck, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the majestic Genkai Sea, sometimes even spotting Iki and Tsushima islands in the distance. The well-maintained walking path allows for a relaxing stroll.
Nearby attractions include Hatozaki Cape and Tachigami Rock, making for a perfect combined sightseeing trip. Hatozaki Cape is about a 10-minute drive from Nanatsugama, offering stunning views of a dramatic coastline. Tachigami Rock, located about 20 minutes away, presents an impressive sight of a unique rock formation rising from the sea.
Nanatsugama of Yakataishi is a captivating tourist spot where you can experience the power and beauty of nature. Be sure to visit!
