Boasting Japan's largest collection of deep-sea creatures! Unique explanations and handmade exhibits by the keepers are also highlights.
Takeshima Aquarium, located on the coast of Takeshima Island in Mikawa Bay, houses approximately 500 species and 4,500 creatures, primarily from Mikawa Bay and Enshu-nada, along with tropical freshwater fish and deep-sea creatures. In 2013, it successfully hatched giant isopod eggs for the first time in Japan. While once facing declining visitor numbers, the aquarium shifted its focus to a more intimate, homey approach prioritizing creature care, resulting in a significant increase in visitors. The 2011 renovation, incorporating suggestions from aquarium producer Gen Nakamura, included a new touch pool featuring Japanese spider crabs, and the staff's initiative to introduce capybaras. Consequently, visitor numbers exceeded 300,000 for the first time in 2015, reaching a record high of 475,000 in 2018. The aquarium boasts Japan's largest collection of deep-sea creatures, including some found nowhere else in the country. A touch pool allowing visitors to interact with deep-sea creatures is also available during the winter months. Most of the exhibits and creature descriptions are handcrafted by the keepers themselves, focusing on fun and engaging information rather than strictly scientific or academic details. A thrilling and entertaining sea lion show is another popular attraction. Takeshima Aquarium offers enjoyment for all ages. We highly recommend a visit!
