A healing spot, this water and soil conservation facility, completed in the Taisho era (1912-1926), is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
The Ushibusegawa French-style Step Structure is a sand control facility constructed between 1885 and 1918 as a countermeasure against frequent floods on the Shinano River during the Meiji era. The French-style step structure, completed in 1916, was designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 2012 due to its remarkable engineering. The step structure mitigates the force of the water flow and prevents soil erosion by gradually reducing the steep slope. The stonework showcases the advanced engineering skills of the time and possesses an artistic beauty. Surrounding areas are well-equipped with campsites and walking paths, allowing visitors to enjoy nature while experiencing history. Beautiful scenery unfolds year-round, with cherry blossoms in spring and autumn foliage in fall. Many tourists visit in the summer to escape the heat, while winter offers breathtaking snowy landscapes and a tranquil atmosphere.
