Overview
The Komatsu Family Residence, located in the Kataoka district of Shiojiri City, Nagano Prefecture, is a headman-class residence built before the early 18th century. This precious building, designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, offers a valuable insight into the lives of wealthy farmers of that era. The residence has undergone several expansions throughout its history, showcasing changes in architectural styles and daily life. You can observe various structures that evoke the lifestyle of the time, including a clay storehouse (dozo), an irori (sunken hearth), and a kitchen. The surrounding area retains the atmosphere of a former post town, offering a pleasant historical stroll. Reservations may be required before visiting the Komatsu Family Residence.
