The Iwakuni Chokokan Museum is a valuable archive for gaining a deep understanding of the history and culture of the Iwakuni Domain. Here, you'll find a diverse collection of exhibits, including art and crafts from the feudal domain era, materials related to Kintai Bridge, and Yamaguchi Prefecture designated cultural properties. The exhibits detailing the history of the Kikkawa family, the feudal lords, and the prosperity of Iwakuni Castle Town are particularly noteworthy. The museum building itself is also a registered tangible cultural property, a modern architectural masterpiece designed by Takeo Sato and built before the war. Takeo Sato played a significant role in the history of modern Japanese architecture, and the Iwakuni Chokokan Museum, designed by him, is attracting attention domestically and internationally not only for its historical value but also as an architecturally important structure. Its architectural style is unique, showing the influence of German Expressionism. The exterior walls are made of slag tiles by Asama Tile, giving it a heavy, stone-like feel. Inside, rows of wide-bottomed columns line the space, and light pours in from skylights and small windows, creating an open and airy atmosphere. The Iwakuni Chokokan Museum is a fascinating spot where you can simultaneously enjoy history, art, and architectural style.
