Hōnen-in Temple is a Jōdo sect Buddhist temple located in Sakyo-ku, Kyoto. Founded in 1206 (Kenin 6) by Priest Hōnen, it dates back to the early Kamakura period. Situated along the Philosopher's Path, the temple's serene grounds boast a pond, a gravel garden, and many other captivating features. The white gravel garden, in particular, is strikingly beautiful, with its intricate patterns contrasting wonderfully with the surrounding greenery. Hōnen-in is known as an ideal place for physical and mental rejuvenation, offering a welcome respite from the city's clamor. The tranquil atmosphere, surrounded by moss-covered gardens and trees, promotes calmness and peace. The garden reveals its beauty throughout the year, with cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in summer, and vibrant autumn leaves in fall. Hōnen-in also offers various experiential programs, such as Shokyo (copying sutras) and matcha tea ceremonies. Recommended for those seeking quiet contemplation or a peaceful retreat surrounded by nature.
