Experience history with National Treasure guest halls and structures connected to Miyamoto Musashi. The expansive gardens are breathtaking and offer stunning seasonal views.
Kanchiin Temple, adjacent to Toji Temple, is associated with Kūkai, the founder of Shingon Buddhism. Founded in the Heian period, it has undergone several changes throughout history to reach its present form. The temple grounds boast numerous historical structures, including a National Treasure guest hall and a study connected to Miyamoto Musashi. The "upper room" of the guest hall displays "Eagle Picture" and fusuma paintings of "Bamboo Grove," believed to have been created by Miyamoto Musashi during his seclusion. The study houses the Five Great Akasoga Bosatsu statues (Important Cultural Property), which captivated many visitors during their exhibition at the Tokyo National Museum in 2019. Kanchiin also features expansive gardens that offer tranquil beauty throughout the year. From cherry blossoms in spring to verdant summer foliage, autumn's vibrant maples, and winter's snow-covered landscapes, the gardens provide a stunning backdrop for every season. Kanchiin Temple is a highly recommended destination for experiencing both history and nature. Visiting it in conjunction with Toji Temple is also recommended.
