Overview

Entoku-in is a Rinzai Zen Buddhist temple of the Myoshin-ji school located in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto. Founded in 1602 (Keicho 7) by Kinoshita Iesada, a close associate of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Entoku-in is beloved by many tourists for its history and beauty. It's particularly enchanting during autumn's foliage season, when the brilliant red leaves and the serene kare-sansui garden create a captivating contrast. The kare-sansui garden, known as "Shoseien," within the temple grounds is a masterpiece of white gravel and carefully arranged stones, offering a tranquil and calming atmosphere. Legend attributes the creation of Entoku-in's kare-sansui garden to Muso Kokushi, a Zen monk of the Muromachi period. He is said to have blended the aesthetic beauty of kare-sansui with Zen philosophy, expressing the impermanence of this world. In the quietude of Entoku-in's kare-sansui garden, one can sense the depth of Zen thought. Beyond the autumn foliage, Entoku-in offers beautiful scenery throughout the year. Cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in summer, and snowy landscapes in winter—each season presents a unique charm. Why not spend some time in the peaceful atmosphere of Entoku-in, and savor the passage of time? Entoku-in is a place where you can experience the history and culture of Kyoto. Immerse yourself in the historical beauty of Entoku-in and find a moment of peace.
