Experience a traditional Kiso-region Machiya (townhouse) that retains the atmosphere of the Edo period.
The Fukazawa Residence is a merchant's house built in 1854 (during the Kaei era), representing a typical example of a Machiya townhouse in the Kiso region. During the Edo period, Kiso flourished as a crucial transportation hub along the Nakasendo Highway, with many travelers passing through. The Fukazawa family conducted business, transporting goods and travelers, in the bustling post town of Niekawa. The Fukazawa Residence is a two-story wooden structure, characterized by its distinctive second-floor lattice windows on the facade. These lattice windows not only provided ventilation and light but also served as a screen from outside views. The deep eaves offered protection from the strong summer sun. The interior preserves a precious glimpse into the lifestyle of that era. Traditional Japanese rooms, including a dirt floor (doma), an irori (sunken hearth), and tatami-mat rooms, are beautifully preserved, allowing visitors to imagine life in those times. The Fukazawa Residence is a valuable building that tells the story of the Kiso region's history and culture, making it a must-see for history and architecture enthusiasts.
