A mountain castle chosen as one of the Continued 100 Famous Castles of Japan, offering a blend of history and nature.
Takayama Castle Ruins is a Sengoku-era (Warring States period) mountain castle ruin located in Hachioji City, Tokyo, and is also selected as one of the Continued 100 Famous Castles of Japan. It is said to have been built by Ujisato Hojo, and its clever construction taking advantage of the natural terrain on a hilltop approximately 200 meters above sea level is a distinctive feature. While there is no remaining Tenshu (main keep), the ruins of the Honmaru (main enclosure), Ninomaru (second enclosure), Sanmaru (third enclosure), dry moats (horikori), vertical moats (tatebori), and circular ramparts (kuruwa) remain, allowing visitors to imagine the structure and scale of the castle at that time. The castle ruins are part of Tokyo's Takayama Nature Park, allowing visitors to explore the vast natural surroundings while experiencing a sense of history. The park boasts beautiful flowers blooming throughout the year, including cherry blossom trees and azaleas, delighting visitors. From the castle ruins, you can enjoy a magnificent view overlooking Hachioji City and the distant mountains. Takayama Castle Ruins is a recommended spot not only for history buffs but also for nature lovers. Access is relatively convenient; it's about a 15-minute bus ride and a 30-minute walk from JR Hachioji Station, making it perfect for a day trip. Be sure to visit and experience the history and nature!
