A tranquil escape from the city bustle, offering a blend of history and nature.
The Shakujii Castle Ruins are located within Tokyo Metropolitan Shakujii Park in Nerima-ku, Tokyo. This is the site of a castle from the mid-Kamakura period, built by the Toyoshima clan and once a crucial stronghold governing the Shakujii territory. In 1477 (Bunmei 9), Toyoshima Kanjyuzaemon no jo, the then-castle lord, lost the castle to Ota Dokan's forces. This battle, known as the Egota-Numagaya-hara Battle, is one of Tokyo's famous historical engagements. Today, remnants of the inner bailey's earthworks and moat remain, offering glimpses into the castle's scale and structure. The surrounding area, including Shakujii Pond and Sanpoji Pond, boasts abundant nature, perfect for leisurely strolls. The Shakujii Castle Ruins provide a tranquil urban oasis where you can explore history and immerse yourself in nature.
