Discover its captivating history through magnificent stone walls, ramparts, and the remains of the former lord's residence at the foot of the mountain.
Overview
Hachioji Castle ruins are located in Hachioji City, Tokyo. It was a mountain castle built by Hōjō Ujisato and is said to have been one of the largest in the Kantō region. Built on the 445-meter-high Fukuzawa-yama mountain (present-day Shiroyama), it was constructed as a branch castle of Odawara Castle in 1587, with Ujisato relocating his base there. The castle's ingenious design features clever defenses against intruders. You can still see remnants of the castle's structure, including the main keep at the summit and the remains of the lord's residence at the foot of the mountain.
From the summit's main keep ruins, you'll enjoy panoramic views of Hachioji City. At the foot of the mountain, the remains of the lord's residence (Goshūden-ato) include stone walls and earthen ramparts. Here, you'll also find Goshūden no Taki waterfall, where it is said that Ujisato's wife, Hisago, threw herself.
