Overview

Kumano Taisha is a shrine located in Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture, and serves as the head shrine of the Kumano Sanzan (Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, and Kumano Nachi Taisha). Known for its unique system of faith, blending nature worship and ancestor worship, Kumano Taisha has been a center of devotion since ancient times, with origins dating back to the 2nd century BC. Historically, the entire mountain range known as Kumano-yama was considered sacred, with reverence for the power of nature and ancestral spirits at the heart of its beliefs. The grounds of Kumano Taisha are surrounded by a vast forest, filled with a sacred atmosphere. Within the precinct, you'll find numerous power spots, including the giant sacred camphor tree, "O-kusu," and the "Yatagarasu" (three-legged crow), which embodies a sacred presence. The "O-kusu" camphor tree is said to be over 1,000 years old and symbolizes Kumano Taisha. Its height exceeds 30 meters, and its sheer size is awe-inspiring. The "Yatagarasu" is considered the sacred messenger of Kumano Taisha. Seen as an incarnation of the sun or a divine messenger, it is revered as a protector of the sacred site, its three-legged form depicted throughout the shrine grounds. Registered as a World Heritage site, Kumano Taisha offers a valuable opportunity to experience Japanese history and culture. When visiting, immerse yourself in the sacred atmosphere and explore its rich history and traditions. Kumano Taisha enshrines various deities, each believed to offer specific blessings. For example, Kumano Hayatama O-kami, the principal deity of Kumano Taisha, is said to bestow protection from misfortune, good fortune, and prosperity in business. Kumano Fu-sumi O-kami, enshrined at Kumano Nachi Taisha (a Kumano Taisha branch shrine), is associated with successful relationships and marital harmony. Consider offering prayers to the respective deities based on your personal wishes. Nestled in a lush natural setting, Kumano Taisha offers breathtaking seasonal scenery. Spring showcases vibrant cherry blossoms, while autumn paints the mountains in fiery hues. Take a stroll through the grounds and appreciate the natural beauty. Kumano Taisha is a sacred site that has been a center of faith for centuries. During your visit, find tranquility within the sacred atmosphere and connect with the shrine's profound history and culture.
