Shirakimine Kogen

Overview

Shirakimine Kogen is a plateau in Minamikushiyamacho, Unzen City, Nagasaki Prefecture, featuring stunning natural beauty and picturesque terraced rice paddies. At an elevation of approximately 300 meters, about 100 terraced rice paddies cascade down the hillside like a staircase, creating a breathtaking landscape that captivates visitors. These terraced rice paddies are said to have been cultivated in the Edo period by the local people to make the most of the steep slopes. Carefully cultivated over many years, these paddies have now become a symbol of Shirakimine Kogen. Throughout the year, the rice paddies offer a variety of stunning views. In spring, vibrant new greenery shines; in summer, lush green leaves bask in the sunlight; in autumn, golden rice stalks announce the harvest; and in winter, snow-covered paddies create a tranquil scene. Shirakimine Kogen's rice terraces are truly a breathtaking spectacle, showcasing different facets throughout the year. Selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Rice Terraces, Shirakimine Kogen's beauty attracts numerous tourists from Japan and abroad. Besides the rice terraces, Shirakimine Kogen offers many other attractions, such as walking trails across the plateau and observation points. From the observation points, you can enjoy the beautiful gradient of the blue sea and sky of Shimabara Bay stretching beyond the rice paddies. Especially at sunset, the magical scenery of the orange-hued sky and sea blending with the green of the rice paddies is simply unforgettable. Shirakimine Kogen is also a popular spot for photography and is highly recommended as a scenic drive route. With hot springs and restaurants scattered in the surrounding area, you can enjoy a full day of exploration.
