Overview
Unzen Jigoku is a hot spring area located at the foot of Mount Fugen, an active volcano in Unzen City, Nagasaki Prefecture. It's said to have been formed by a volcanic eruption approximately 1,000 years ago. Volcanic activity continues to this day, with sulfur springs and hot mud erupting.
The area known as Jigokudani (Hell Valley) truly lives up to its name, with steam and hot mud erupting in a spectacular, almost otherworldly display. The pungent smell of sulfur and the hot air create a truly unique and unforgettable atmosphere. Yet, the scene is strangely beautiful, showcasing the overwhelming power of nature.
From the Jigokudani boardwalk, you can observe the fumaroles created by the eruption and the bubbling hot mud. The surrounding area is also home to an onsen town with a charming retro atmosphere, featuring traditional hot spring inns and souvenir shops. You can experience the sulfurous onsen here.
Taking a short trip from Unzen Jigoku, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Kaimon-dake and the Shimabara Peninsula. Kaimon-dake, known as the "Satsuma Fuji" for its stunning beauty, presents a magnificent sight from Unzen Jigoku.
The Shimabara Peninsula, formed by the eruption of Mount Unzen, is blessed with abundant natural beauty. The view of the Shimabara Peninsula from Unzen Jigoku is both majestic and expansive.
Unzen Jigoku, where you can enjoy both nature and onsen, is sure to create an unforgettable travel memory.
