The Saga Family Residence is an Edo-period farmhouse located in Taiheime Nagasaki, Akita City, Akita Prefecture. This beautiful house with its thatched roof is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan and is a precious historical building, among the oldest surviving farmhouses in Akita Prefecture.
The Saga family is said to have originated from medieval samurai and became wealthy farmers serving as kanmo (a local official) in the early modern period. Based on its construction techniques, the residence is estimated to have been built in the first half of the 19th century.
The residence features a characteristic "ryuchumon-zukuri" style, with projecting sections extending east and west from the main building's south side. A spacious earth floor includes a stable, while the upper floor centers around a large room with two tatami-mat rooms on the upper level and bedrooms in the rear and lower areas. The thick wooden beams give the entire structure a powerful and ancient impression.
As it's still used as a residence, visits are by reservation only. When visiting, please be respectful of its current use and maintain a quiet demeanor.
