Experience precious structures of modern industrial heritage, including a dam and reservoir built in the Meiji era.
Located upstream of the Asahi River flowing through Akita City, Fujikura Water Source Pond was constructed between 1903 (Meiji 36) and 1911 (Meiji 44) to secure the city's water supply and fire protection water. As the oldest waterworks facility in Tohoku, it boasts valuable structures – a gravity-type concrete dam and reservoir – showcasing the high technological level of the time. The dam, built with stonework, has a solid structure and harmonizes beautifully with the surrounding nature. The flow of water and the red-painted bridge on the embankment create a stunning contrast against the landscape. Fujikura Water Source Pond is also known as one of Japan's three most beautiful dams, alongside Shirasu Dam in Oita Prefecture and Nagashino Weir in Aichi Prefecture. In 1993, it was designated as a National Important Cultural Property (modern industrial heritage) under the name "Fujikura Water Source Waterworks Facility." This was the first case of a modern industrial heritage site being designated as an Important Cultural Property, holding a significant position in Japanese civil engineering history. When visiting Fujikura Water Source Pond, take some time to appreciate not only the dam and reservoir but also the surrounding natural beauty. Enjoy a relaxing stroll while experiencing the rich nature and history.
