Kakunodate-machi, located in Senboku City, Akita Prefecture, is a beautiful town where history and nature blend seamlessly. Once a thriving castle town of the Kakunodate clan, a branch of the Akita domain, it still boasts samurai residences and merchant houses that evoke its past. The Samurai Residence Street, in particular, is designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, preserving the atmosphere of an Edo-era town. Approximately 18 samurai residences line the street, offering glimpses into the lives of the people who lived there. Some residences are open to the public, providing a deeper understanding of their daily lives. Kakunodate-machi is also known as the "Little Kyoto of Michinoku," blessed with stunning natural beauty, including cherry blossom avenues and autumn foliage. During the spring cherry blossom season, approximately 400 cherry trees burst into bloom, painting the town in shades of pink. Autumn brings breathtaking fall colors, making it a destination for enjoying the beauty of each season.
