A precious traditional building where the history of Mount Fuji faith lives on.
Overview
The Former Sotokawa Family Residence stands as one of the homes of the 'Oshi,' individuals who lived in Fujiyoshida during the Edo and Meiji periods when Mount Fuji's religious significance flourished. Oshi provided lodging for Mount Fuji pilgrims, assisting with preparations for their ascents, offering meals, and even performing prayers on their behalf. The main house was constructed in 1768 (Meiwa 5), with a back room added in the late Edo period, preserving a valuable glimpse into the past. Inside, you'll find a shrine dedicated to the god of Mount Fuji, spacious guest rooms revealing the lives of the Oshi, and an exhibition of precious ancient documents, offering insights into the relationship between Mount Fuji's faith and the Oshi. The Former Sotokawa Family Residence is a precious structure where you can tangibly experience the history and culture of Mount Fuji faith.
