A sacred site of Mount Fuji worship located in the mountains! Experience the majesty of Mount Fuji up close while immersing yourself in history and mystery.
Fuji Omuro Sengen Shrine is a true power spot where you can tangibly experience the history and nature of Mount Fuji worship. Legend says it was founded in 699 AD by Fujiwara no Yoshitada. It's considered the first shrine dedicated to Mount Fuji within the mountain itself. The location of the former main shrine (honmiya) is now known as the Okumiya (inner shrine), situated at the second station of the Yoshida trail on Mount Fuji. The Okumiya grounds are an enclave of Fujiyoshida City within Fuji Kawaguchiko Town's Katsuyama area. Being considered the first shrine dedicated to Mount Fuji in the mountain, it has long been a site of faith and pilgrimage for many mountaineers. Meanwhile, the Satomiya (village shrine) in Katsuyama on the shores of Lake Kawaguchi is where the honmiya was relocated in 1973. The present main shrine's main hall was built in 1612 by Torii Narutsugu, a retainer of the Tokugawa family. After four major renovations, it was moved in 1973 from the second station of Mount Fuji to its current location next to the Satomiya. Its structure is a single-bay, gabled-roof style with a projecting entrance porch, featuring a curved gable roof. The roof is clad in copper plates imitating cypress bark, showcasing the characteristics of the Momoyama period. Designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, the main hall exudes a dignified atmosphere that reflects its history, leaving visitors in awe. The shrine also offers magnificent views of Mount Fuji, and you can enjoy the beautiful scenery throughout the year, with cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in autumn. Fuji Omuro Sengen Shrine is truly a power spot where you can feel the history and nature of Mount Fuji worship. Be sure to visit!
