Enjoy art while taking in breathtaking views of the Onomichi Suido at this stylish museum designed by Tadao Ando.
Overview
Onomichi City Museum of Art, opened in 2003, is a museum designed by world-renowned architect Tadao Ando. Located in Senkoji Park, its captivating feature is its stunning location overlooking the beautiful Onomichi Suido. The building itself embodies Ando's architectural beauty, with exposed concrete walls and glass windows that bathe the interior in natural light, creating a unique atmosphere.
The museum boasts a diverse collection, including works by Onomichi-born artists Kazusaku Kobayashi and Gyoun Hirai, as well as pieces by the French painter Georges Rouault. Kobayashi Kazusaku was a Western-style painter known for his landscapes and portraits. Hirai Gyoun was a calligrapher from Onomichi. Georges Rouault was a French painter and a leading figure of 20th-century Expressionism, known for his powerful brushstrokes and vibrant colors.
The view of the Onomichi Suido from the museum is simply breathtaking. The panoramic vista of the blue sea stretching below, distant islands, and the townscape will captivate visitors. The surrounding area also features other Onomichi attractions such as Senkoji Temple and the Bungaku no Komichi (Literary Path).
Onomichi City Museum of Art offers a memorable museum experience, where Ando's architectural beauty blends seamlessly with Onomichi's rich natural beauty and culture. Be sure to visit when you're in Onomichi.
