Experience a tranquil world where Zen and gardens merge—a serenity you won't find in the city.
Jinsho-ji Temple: A Museum of Zen and Gardens, located in Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture, is a Rinzai-shu sect temple offering a unique space where you can experience the spirit of Zen through your five senses. This museum seamlessly blends contemporary art, gardens, and tea rooms. Designed by architect Terunobu Fujimori, the buildings utilize pine trees—symbolic of the Seto Inland Sea region—in a design that blends traditional styles with modern elements, resulting in a distinctive beauty. The installation "Koutei," created by sculptor Kohei Nawa, is a striking, boat-shaped structure entirely clad in wood. Inside, visitors can experience an installation that explores the perception of light reflecting on water. Another highlight is the temple's collection of approximately 200 Zen paintings and calligraphy by Hakuin Ekaku, one of the largest such collections in Japan. These works are regularly rotated and showcased year-round in the permanent exhibition hall, "Sougen-do." A vast temple ground features buildings relocated from Shiga Prefecture dating back to the 17th century, as well as a reconstructed tea room modeled after those of Sen no Rikyu. These buildings are connected by serene gardens that offer stunning seasonal views, providing a perfect escape from the city's hustle and bustle. Jinsho-ji Temple: A Museum of Zen and Gardens offers a unique blend of contemporary art and traditional Zen, creating a tranquil atmosphere unlike anything found in the city. It's an ideal destination for those seeking peace and rejuvenation.
