Overview

Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter is a town steeped in history and culture, preserving much of the townscape from the early Edo period when it flourished as a tenryo (directly ruled by the shogunate) town. The beautiful scenery, with its white-walled storehouses, namako-kabe (plaster walls with a textured surface), and willow trees, will soothe your soul. A stroll along the Kurashiki River offers a captivating glimpse into the area's rich history. Traditional machiya (townhouse) buildings still stand, silently watching over the lives of the people. The area also boasts excellent cultural facilities, such as the Ohara Museum of Art and the Kurashiki Museum of Folk Crafts, offering opportunities to immerse yourself in art. Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter has many highlights. Begin by exploring the Motomachi area, lined with white-walled storehouses. These former mansions of wealthy merchants have been transformed into museums, shops, and cafes. The Honmachi area, along the Kurashiki River, features beautiful willow trees, creating a picturesque scene. You can even enjoy a boat ride on the Kurashiki River. Many traditional buildings remain in Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter. The Ohashi Family Residence, a merchant's mansion built in the late Edo period, is designated as an Important Cultural Property. A visit inside offers a glimpse into the lives of people from that era. The Kurashiki Museum of Folk Crafts showcases the collection of Soetsu Yanagi, the founder of the Mingei (folk crafts) movement, offering an opportunity to appreciate traditional Japanese aesthetics. Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter also boasts delicious food. Cafes and restaurants housed in renovated machiya serve dishes and sweets made with local ingredients. Numerous restaurants are also clustered around the area. Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter is enjoyable both day and night. At night, the entire town is illuminated, revealing a magical scene quite different from the daytime view. The illuminated willow trees along the Kurashiki River are particularly breathtaking. Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter is a captivating destination you'll want to visit again and again.
