The Kurashiki Municipal Museum of Art is located in Chuo, Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture. Opened in 1983, it's housed in the renovated former Kurashiki City Hall building, completed in 1960. The museum's core collection centers around the works of Haruson Ikeda, a Japanese painter from Tamajima Ooshima, Kurashiki City. His collection numbers an impressive 489 pieces. Ikeda, a prominent Japanese painter active from the early Showa period through the postwar era, excelled in landscape and portraiture. Many of his works depict Kurashiki's scenery and the lives of its people, making them cherished by locals. In addition to Ikeda's works, the museum showcases modern and contemporary Japanese and Western paintings, as well as sculptures. The building itself is a valuable historical structure, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan in 2020. The former Kurashiki City Hall is recognized as a prime example of "Modernist architecture" from the postwar reconstruction period, and even now, in its new life as a museum, it retains much of its original character. Conveniently located next to the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter, the museum is an ideal stop during a stroll through the area.
