Okayama Prefectural Museum of Art boasts excellent access, located near Korakuen Garden and Okayama Castle! It houses a diverse collection of works, primarily focusing on Okayama's art.
Overview
The Okayama Prefectural Museum of Art, opened in 1988, is situated in Tenjinmachi, the heart of Okayama City.
With excellent access, within walking distance of Korakuen Garden and Okayama Castle, it houses approximately 5,000 artworks encompassing various genres, primarily focusing on Okayama's art, including paintings, sculptures, and crafts.
The permanent exhibition, "Okayama Art Exhibition," showcases works by renowned artists such as Sesshu, Miyamoto Musashi, and Urakama Gyodo, offering a glimpse into the history of Okayama's art.
A particular highlight is the national treasure, "Akaei-o-yoroi Kabuto, Osodetsuki" – a suit of armor dating back to the late Heian period. The inclusion of a helmet and large sleeves (protective arm coverings) is quite rare, especially in red lacquered leather armor.
Special exhibitions feature traveling exhibitions from museums nationwide and contemporary art shows, ensuring a continuous stream of new artistic experiences.
Designed by Shinichi Okada, the architect famed for his work on the Supreme Court building, the museum itself is an architectural masterpiece.
Surrounding the museum are many other tourist attractions, such as Korakuen Garden, Okayama Castle, and the Kibi Road, making it a perfect area for a full day of exploration.
The Okayama Prefectural Museum of Art offers a captivating opportunity to delve into Okayama's art and culture. We highly recommend a visit!
