Experience the history and tradition of Tokyo University of the Arts at this museum.
The Tokyo University of the Arts University Museum, Ueno Campus, houses a collection dating back to the founding of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1887, making it an indispensable museum for understanding Japanese art history. The exhibits range from student works to pieces by prominent figures in modern Japanese art history, such as Yokoyama Taikan, Shimomura Kanzan, and Rishide Haruko. Each artwork offers insights into the evolution and enduring legacy of Japanese art. The main museum building, completed in 1929, is a majestic red-brick structure steeped in history. The Churenkan (exhibition hall) is a red-tiled building designed by Shinichiro Okada and completed in May 1929. The Masaki Memorial Hall, a traditional Japanese-style building, was designed by Yoji Kanazawa and completed in July 1935. These buildings, each showcasing a distinct architectural style, are works of art themselves. Located within Ueno Park, the museum offers a tranquil environment surrounded by lush greenery, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in art. The vibrant energy of the Tokyo University of the Arts Ueno campus, located next to the museum, adds another layer to the experience.
