Shirahone Onsen: a hidden hot spring nestled in the majestic nature of the Northern Alps. Rejuvenate your mind and body in the naturally flowing hot spring waters!
Shirahone Onsen is a hot spring resort located in Azumi, Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture. Situated at an altitude of 1400 meters in the foothills of Mount Norikura in the Northern Alps, it's within the Chubu-Sangaku National Park. Known as a spa town since ancient times, its therapeutic effects cover a wide range of ailments, including gastrointestinal diseases, neuroses, gynecological problems, and chronic fatigue. The naturally flowing hot spring water is colorless and transparent, gradually turning milky white over time. This milky white coloration is caused by the precipitation of sulfur particles from hydrogen sulfide in the water and the decomposition of calcium bicarbonate into calcium carbonate. Around Shirahone Onsen, you'll find nature trails perfect for leisurely walks and historical sites steeped in the area's rich past. Shirahone Onsen boasts a long history, with records suggesting its existence as early as the Kamakura period. Legend has it that Takeda Shingen, a prominent warlord of the Sengoku period, also frequented the hot springs for therapeutic purposes. In the Edo period, it was developed as a full-fledged hot spring inn by Saito Magozaemon. Due to its geographically isolated location, the Saito surname remains prevalent, creating a unique sense of community based on local ties and kinship. Shirahone Onsen captivates visitors with its unique atmosphere and highly effective hot spring waters.
