Overview

Tendou Onsen is a hot spring resort located in Tendou City, Yamagata Prefecture. Discovered in 1911 (Meiji 44) during well digging in the Kamada district, it opened the following year. Initially called Kamada Onsen, it was renamed Tendou Onsen in 1924 (Taisho 13). There were once 19 hot spring sources within the area, but in 1955 (Showa 30), they began centralized management, leading to larger hotels and the formation of the current hot spring town. Tendou Onsen is a sodium-calcium sulfate spring with a temperature of 69°C (156°F). Its therapeutic benefits include relief from arteriosclerosis, chronic skin diseases, muscle pain, joint stiffness, bruises, chronic digestive diseases, cold extremities, and post-illness recovery. The hot spring town boasts a range of facilities, from hotels and inns to footbaths, handbaths, and drinking fountains; a well-balanced selection catering to various needs and scales. Tendou City is renowned for its shogi (Japanese chess) pieces, and the city even has a shogi piece museum. Shogi title matches are sometimes held in local hot spring inns. There's also a local song called "Tendou Onsen Ko-uta" (Tendou Onsen Ballad). Tendou Onsen is a captivating hot spring area where history, culture, and nature harmoniously coexist.
