Naruko Onsen is a hot spring resort located in Oosaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, famous for its eight distinct spring sources. Its history stretches back to the Heian period, where it thrived as a spa town. The quality of its waters has long attracted many writers and artists. For example, Matsuo Basho, the great haiku master, is said to have visited Naruko Onsen during his journey on the Oku-no-Hosomichi (Narrow Road to the Deep North) and been deeply impressed by its beauty. The hot spring town retains its traditional atmosphere, lined with charming Ryokans and hotels. A simple stroll through the town offers a glimpse into its rich history. Each spring boasts unique therapeutic properties, allowing visitors to choose the perfect onsen for their needs. For example, simple hot springs and sulfur springs are effective for neuralgia and muscle pain, while chloride springs and hydrogencarbonate springs are recommended for their beautifying effects. Naruko Onsen also offers a variety of day-trip onsen facilities for casual enjoyment. The surrounding area boasts abundant natural beauty, including Naruko Gorge and Lake Gata. Naruko Gorge, carved by the Ooyagawa River over approximately 10,000 years, presents a breathtaking spectacle of deep cliffs stretching 4 kilometers. The area encompasses Naruko Onsen, Higashi-Naruko Onsen, Kawadate Onsen, Nakayamadaira Onsen, and Onigashira Onsen, collectively known as the Naruko Onsenkyo hot spring region. Naruko Gorge is also known as a prime spot for autumn foliage in Miyagi Prefecture. Lake Gata, a crater lake in the Naruko volcanic group, displays a mesmerizing array of colors, shifting from emerald green to cobalt blue depending on the sunlight. Naruko Onsen offers a captivating blend of rejuvenating onsen and stunning natural landscapes. Come and experience its magic!
