Overview

Katanuma Lake is a beautiful caldera lake surrounded by mountains in Naruko Onsen, Osaki City, Miyagi Prefecture. Estimated to have formed about 1200 years ago, it's an oval-shaped lake measuring 462 meters east-west, 326 meters north-south, and 1380 meters in circumference. Katanuma is renowned for its stunning emerald green waters, exhibiting a variety of hues depending on the sunlight and weather, earning it the nickname "Lake of Seven Colors." On sunny days, the surface shimmers with a vibrant emerald green, creating a breathtaking contrast with the surrounding mountains that captivates visitors. A walking path encircles Katanuma Lake, providing a tranquil setting for a leisurely stroll. A lakeside rest house offers meals and boat rentals, allowing for a relaxed experience without time constraints. Boating to the center of the lake reveals the volcanic gases bubbling from the lakebed. Katanuma is also known as a highly acidic lake, devoid of fish. This contributes to the lake's serene atmosphere, filled with the sounds of birdsong and the quiet beauty of nature. Katanuma Lake is a highly recommended sightseeing spot, offering a profound experience of majestic nature and mystical beauty.
