A historic hot spring resort in the Hakkoda Mountains. The strongly acidic hot springs are said to be effective for neuralgia and rheumatism, and have been a popular onsen (hot spring) for a long time.
Overview
A volcanic hot spring located in Aomori City, Aomori Prefecture, in the Hakkoda mountain range. As its name indicates, it's highly acidic, with a pH below 2.0. Known as a therapeutic hot spring since ancient times, it's currently home to a single inn, the "Suka Yu Onsen Ryokan." Its famous Hiba Sen-ninburo (cypress thousand-person bath) is a mixed-gender bath with a central divider separating men and women. Nearby attractions include Jigoku-numa (Hell Swamp) and the Tohoku University Botanical Garden Hakkoda Branch.
Rail: 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes (depending on the bus) from Aomori Station on the JR East/Aoimori Railway Aoimori Line via JR Bus Tohoku Towada Kita Line.
