Overview
The former Kazui Kakehashi Residence was the shoya-yashiki (headman's residence) of Kazui Kakehashi, a patriot from Yusuhara Village in Tosa Province. Together with Kitaro Yoshimura, the headman of Yusuhara Village, Kakehashi provided financial support to those who escaped their domains, including Sakamoto Ryoma and Shingo Nasu. Though he considered escaping himself, he feared the repercussions for his family and ultimately took his own life.
This residence was relocated to its current location, the site of successive shoya-yashiki including that of Kitaro Yoshimura, and later the former Yusuhara Village Office. Above the 8-tatami mat 'oku no ma' (inner room) is a 'hime kakushi no ma' (hidden room for a princess), a secret space for refuge in emergencies.
Imagine the lives of people in those days while experiencing a piece of history. It's also attractive that it's free to visit.
