Overview
Iwayagawa Valley is a gorge located in Besshi, Niyodogawa-cho, Kochi Prefecture. It's nestled within the Shikoku Karst Prefectural Nature Park. Originating from Hibiki Pass, roughly midway between Tengu no Mori (Tengu's Forest) and Toriigatake Mountain, the Iwayagawa River flows into the Niyodogawa River. This beautiful stream is one of the Top 40 waters of Tosa.
The valley is home to numerous waterfalls and ponds of varying sizes. Spring's fresh greenery and autumn's vibrant foliage beautifully adorn the unique rock formations, captivating visitors. The nationally designated natural monuments, Oobi-wari and Koobi-wari, located in the upper reaches of the valley, are breathtaking examples of nature's artistry, formed by massive cracks in the bedrock.
The surrounding area also features villages steeped in the legend of the Taira clan refugees, as well as the Nakagoe and Ichikawa residences, renowned for their weeping cherry blossoms and Akiha Festival, and Akiha Shrine. These sites offer a glimpse into the region's rich history and culture.
