Overview
Iwaya Shrine, located in Hojyuzan, Higashi-Fuke Village, Asakura District, Fukuoka Prefecture, is a shrine designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Established in 1698 by Nagamasa Kuroda, the fourth feudal lord of the Fukuoka Domain, it's known as a valuable structure related to the Hikosan Shugendo (mountain asceticism) tradition.
The shrine's most striking feature is its outer hall, ingeniously built into the recess of a sheer rock face. The open design, lacking a roof and walls on the back and left side, creates a mystical space seamlessly integrated with the surrounding nature. The Hojusei, the sacred jewel stone, rests at the center of this outer hall. This Hojusei is said to grant wishes and is the origin of the village's name.
Iwaya Shrine boasts a long history. Legend recounts that in 547 AD, during the reign of Emperor Kinmei, a shining object suddenly descended from the heavens onto the rock face of the Iwaya cave. Villagers, inspired by the Buddhist term for a "jewel that grants any wish," named it Hojusei and enshrined it as the sacred object.
Nestled in the naturally abundant Hojyuzan, Iwaya Shrine offers breathtaking views. The grounds are scattered with large rocks, conveying the raw power of nature. Cherry blossoms in spring and vibrant autumn leaves create a picturesque scene throughout the year.
Iwaya Shrine is an ideal place for rejuvenation, offering a tranquil atmosphere filled with sacred energy. Take your time to soak in the history and natural beauty.
