Overview

The Old Kendo-ji Temple Site is located in Chito, Kunimi-cho, Kunisaki City, Oita Prefecture, and represents one of the most important temple sites in Rokugo Manzan. It is said that Nimon, the founder of Rokugo Manzan, first established it in 718. It once thrived as the main temple of Rokugo Manzan, and was even called the "Koya-san of the West." With 16 subsidiary temples, it was the core of Rokugo Manzan, bustling with many monks and worshippers. However, during the Tensho period, it suffered a devastating fire set by Otomo Sorin, resulting in the destruction of its large temple complex. Although it was rebuilt in the Bunroku period, it never recovered its former prosperity. The current Old Kendo-ji Temple Site preserves remnants of the former temple complex, such as stone walls and stone Buddhas, allowing visitors to sense the passage of history in the tranquil atmosphere. At the former main hall site stands a half-carved Nio statue in a single rock, its imposing presence still echoing the former temple's lively past. Following the stone-paved path, you'll find various highlights, including the place where Nimon Bosatsu passed away, a group of five-storied pagodas (gorinto), and Gotsuji Fudo-son. These remains are precious legacies that convey the history and culture of Rokugo Manzan, deeply moving all who visit. Mount Fudo, where the Old Kendo-ji Temple Site is located, is also perfect for a light hike, allowing you to enjoy the abundant natural beauty. However, please be aware that the roads are very narrow, so exercise caution when visiting by car. Autumn is particularly spectacular, as the entire mountain is painted in shades of red and yellow, creating a magical landscape. It's a breathtaking spot to enjoy the colorful foliage in the quiet atmosphere, attracting many tourists. The Old Kendo-ji Temple Site is a quiet, mystical place enveloped in history and nature. Loved by many, it's a power spot where you can touch the history of Rokugo Manzan and feel the romance of ancient times.
