Overview

Zenkoji Temple, located in Nagano City, Nagano Prefecture, is said to have been founded in the 7th century. While its official name is simply "Zenkoji," it's often referred to as "Nagano Zenkoji." Its principal Buddha statue, a hidden Amitabha Tathagata, is a designated Important Cultural Property of Japan. Zenkoji has long been a site of profound faith, famously associated with the saying, "You must visit at least once in your lifetime." This deep-seated reverence stems from the temple's founding purpose: to spread Buddhist teachings and offer salvation to all. Zenkoji remains one of Japan's most beloved Buddhist temples. The temple grounds are extensive, brimming with captivating sights. The National Treasure Niomon Gate, standing proudly at the entrance, is an iconic symbol of Zenkoji. Beyond the gate lies a long cloister, housing numerous Buddhist statues; a peaceful stroll through this area offers a sense of tranquility. Further along, you'll find the five-storied pagoda, a 46.5-meter-tall landmark and symbol of the temple. Zenkoji boasts numerous *shukubo* (temple lodgings) where visitors can stay and savor *shojin ryori* (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine). Shojin ryori, prepared without any animal products, uses vegetables, tofu, and other plant-based ingredients. Indulging in shojin ryori at Zenkoji provides a truly restorative experience for both body and mind. Zenkoji Temple offers stunning seasonal landscapes. Cherry blossoms in spring and vibrant autumn foliage create a feast for the eyes throughout the year. The autumn leaves, in particular, paint the entire temple grounds in a breathtaking spectacle of red and gold. Zenkoji Temple is cherished as a place of faith and a captivating tourist destination. If you're ever in Nagano Prefecture, be sure to visit this remarkable temple.
