Overview

Futagoji Temple is a Tendai Buddhist temple located on the mid-slope of Ryoko Mountain in Ryoko, Anki-machi, Kunisaki-shi, Oita Prefecture. It flourished as the head temple of the Nakayama branch of Rokugo Manzan, serving as a center for Buddhist training. Legend says it was founded by Ninmon Bosatsu in 718 AD, giving it a long and storied history. During the Edo period, it became the most important prayer site for the Kitsuki clan and played a pivotal role in overseeing Rokugo Manzan as its general headquarters, highlighting its immense historical significance. Flanking the stone steps leading to the temple gate stand two magnificent stone Kongorikishi (Nyo) statues, created in the late Edo period and considered the largest on the Kunisaki Peninsula (total height 245cm, statue height 230cm). Their imposing presence overwhelms visitors and reflects the temple's grandeur. The temple grounds are nestled within the Setonaikai National Park, surrounded by abundant nature. The autumn foliage is particularly breathtaking, painting the entire temple grounds in a fiery spectacle of color. During the autumn foliage season, the temple attracts numerous tourists eager to capture the beauty in photographs. Known as a temple for child blessings, Futagoji Temple is bustling with worshippers on the day of the Horse (Uma) in every month. A stone monument dedicated to prayers for child blessings stands on the grounds, attracting many women seeking safe childbirth or blessings for children. A bell tower houses the "Bell of Peace," whose ringing is said to bring peace of mind and grant wishes. Futagoji Temple is a mountain temple embraced by history and nature. Be sure to visit when you explore the Kunisaki Peninsula.
