A shrine where you can feel history and nature while viewing the beautiful spring waters of Oshino Hakkai.
Asama Shrine is a shrine founded over 200 years ago as the guardian deity of Oshino Hakkai. It has a history dating back to when Minamoto no Yoritomo designated the grounds during a hunting expedition in the foothills of Mount Fuji. The gate houses Jikokuten and Zochoten, and three important cultural property deities: the legendary flower-blooming princess Kaguya Hime, a legendary falconer, and a legendary dog handler, also designated as important cultural properties. You can experience a sacred atmosphere in a quiet and calm setting. The shrine also houses a rare Mount Fuji mikoshi (portable shrine) shaped like Mount Fuji, allowing you to feel a sense of history. Oshino Hakkai is a collection of eight ponds fed by the groundwater of Mount Fuji. It's a popular tourist spot designated as a National Natural Monument, one of Japan's 100 Best Waters, and part of Yamanashi Prefecture's "New Fuji-Hakkei" (100 Views of Mount Fuji). Asama Shrine offers breathtaking views, allowing you to pray while gazing at the beautiful spring waters of Oshino Hakkai. The surrounding area is bustling with souvenir shops and restaurants. When visiting Oshino Hakkai, be sure to stop by Asama Shrine and experience its history and natural beauty.
