Kawaguchiko Sengen Shrine, located in Kawaguchi, Fujiyoshida, Minamitsuru District, Yamanashi Prefecture, commands a breathtaking location overlooking Mount Fuji and Lake Kawaguchiko. This sacred and spiritually powerful place has been a center of faith for generations.
Its founding is said to date back to 865 AD (Jogan 7), when the deity of Mount Asama was enshrined to appease a volcanic eruption.
The grounds are home to numerous giant trees, including the 1200-year-old "Seven Cedar Trees." The sacred atmosphere is palpable. Among the "Seven Cedar Trees," the "Parent and Child Cedars," two trees joined at the roots, are known as a symbol of marital bliss and are visited by many couples.
Furthermore, the "Kawaguchi Children's Dance," designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, is performed as an ancient Shinto ritual at the annual festival on April 25th.
