The Nomura Family Samurai Residence Site is a historical site preserving the atmosphere of the past, with elegant buildings and a picturesque garden harmoniously blending together. The Nomura family were high-ranking retainers who served the Maeda clan of the Kaga domain, their lineage spanning generations and supporting the clan's governance. The residence, built during the Edo period, offers a glimpse into the lifestyle and culture of that era.
A particular highlight is the fusuma (sliding doors) paintings in the "Jodan no Ma" (upper-ranked room) by artists employed by the Kaga clan. These masterful paintings showcase the high cultural level of the Kaga domain. The site also displays heirloom swords and armor of the Nomura family, a must-see for history buffs.
Surrounding the residence is a beautiful Japanese garden, a pond-style strolling garden featuring ponds, waterfalls, and rock formations, creating a harmonious and scenic landscape. This garden has received high praise, ranking highly in the American gardening magazine, *Journal of Japanese Gardening*. In 2009, it earned two stars in the *Michelin Green Guide Japan*, a guidebook for foreign tourists, attracting global attention.
The Nomura Family Samurai Residence Site is a valuable location to experience Kanazawa's history and culture. Be sure to visit!
