Tendoin Temple was founded in 1603 as the family temple of the Maeda clan, rulers of the Kaga domain, known for their immense wealth ("Kaga Million Koku"). Over time, it received numerous cultural artifacts as donations from successive Maeda lords, leading to its current form.
Its iconic five-storied pagoda, built in 1630 and designated as an Important Cultural Property, stands tall at 36 meters. This magnificent all-hinoki (Japanese cypress) structure overlooks Kanazawa City, commanding attention from afar.
The temple also houses numerous artifacts related to the Maeda clan. These include portraits of Maeda Toshiie, the first lord, and tea utensils used by Maeda Toshinaga, the second lord, offering a glimpse into precious historical materials.
The temple's garden is a beautiful chisen-kaiyu-shiki (pond-style strolling) garden, offering scenic beauty throughout the year. From cherry blossoms in spring to autumn foliage, the garden reveals a different charm with each season.
