A tranquil space where history and nature harmonize, borrowing the beautiful stone walls of Kanazawa Castle as a backdrop.
Gyokuseninmaru Garden is a Japanese garden located within Kanazawa Castle, originally constructed in 1634 (Kan'ei 11) by Maeda Toshinaga, the third lord of the Kaga Domain. Subsequently refined by successive feudal lords, it existed until the abolition of the feudal system. Unlike Kenrokuen Garden, which served as a place for entertaining guests, Gyokuseninmaru Garden is believed to have been a more private garden for the lord's personal enjoyment. While the garden was lost during the Meiji period, it was painstakingly reconstructed starting in 2017 based on archaeological findings from a five-year excavation (2008-2012) and various historical documents. The garden was built on top of carefully preserved historical earthworks and foundations. The charm of Gyokuseninmaru Garden lies in its stunning scenery, using the beautiful stone walls of Kanazawa Castle as a backdrop. Enjoy the unique atmosphere of a pond-style strolling garden, taking in the beautiful seasonal views. From cherry blossoms in spring to fresh greenery in summer, autumn leaves in fall, and snowy landscapes in winter, the garden offers captivating beauty throughout the year. The garden also features a teahouse, "Gyokusenan," where you can enjoy matcha tea and sweets while overlooking the garden. Gyokusenan was built on the site of the former "Roji Yakusho" (garden maintenance office) during the Edo period. From inside, you have a commanding view of the garden, with the artistically designed stone walls, including the "shikishi-danshaku-tsumi ishigaki" (stacked stone wall with colored paper strips), as a stunning backdrop. On weekend evenings, the garden is beautifully illuminated, creating a magical atmosphere. Visiting Kanazawa Castle alongside Gyokuseninmaru Garden enhances the historical experience.
