Sonogi Highland is a magnificent grassland sprawling across approximately 700 meters above sea level in Sonogi Village, Uda District, Nara Prefecture.
This highland, used as a living space for people since ancient times, witnesses the spectacular yamayaki (mountain burning) in spring. The blazing flames spreading across the entire area are a truly impressive sight. Yamayaki is a traditional farming practice carried on since ancient times to maintain the grassland, and the scenery is nothing short of magnificent.
In summer, the vibrant green foliage offers a refreshing escape to the highland's cool atmosphere.
Autumn brings a breathtaking transformation as susuki (Japanese silver grass) plumes shimmer silver and gold in the sunlight, creating an ethereal landscape. The golden glow of the susuki at sunset is particularly stunning and breathtaking.
Furthermore, in the midsection of the highland lies Okame Pond, steeped in the legend of 'Okame,' where you can observe rare plants unique to wetlands. Okame Pond was once a much larger wetland, and precious plants inhabit the surrounding area.
