Overview
Keizakuen Garden is a Japanese garden located in Tennoji Park in Tennoji Ward, Osaka City. Originally completed in 1918 (Taisho 7) as the garden of the Sumitomo family's Chausuyama main residence, the Sumitomo, a wealthy merchant family with roots stretching back to the Edo period, commissioned this exquisite garden. The garden's design was by Yuzasai Kizu (also known as Kizu Soin and Kizu Soen), and its construction was overseen by Jihei Ogawa. Ogawa, considered a master of modern Japanese garden design, is responsible for many renowned gardens, including the Heian Jingu Shrine garden, Maruyama Park, and the Murin-an. Keizakuen Garden is one of Ogawa's masterpieces, a prime example of a 'rinsenen kaiyu-shiki' garden (a stroll garden with ponds and streams). Visitors can stroll around the pond featuring three small islands, appreciating the beauty of the garden from various perspectives, including the artificial hills, waterfalls, and bridges. The garden also boasts a teahouse, 'Chouseian,' offering a serene atmosphere perfect for tea ceremonies or poetry gatherings. Keizakuen Garden is highly recommended for those seeking a tranquil escape from the city's hustle and bustle. Its proximity to the Osaka Municipal Museum of Art makes it an ideal destination for combining art and nature. Keizakuen Garden is a precious cultural asset of Osaka, a peaceful haven offering a connection with nature within the city.
