Explore the beautiful estate where Japanese painter Hashimoto Kansetsu spent his later years. Highlights include a stunning pond garden designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty and a museum showcasing Kansetsu's artwork.
Overview
Hakusasonso is the former residence of Japanese painter Hashimoto Kansetsu, where he lived from 1916 and dedicated his later years to his artistic pursuits. The approximately 10,000 square-meter site features three distinctive studios where Kansetsu painted, a tea room, a prayer hall (jibutsu-do), and other unique buildings. Most notably, the pond garden, designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty, covers 7,400 square meters and was designed by Kansetsu himself. Stone sculptures dating from the Heian and Kamakura periods are placed harmoniously within the lush greenery, creating a breathtaking landscape. Buildings such as Kansetsu's study, living room, and guest room are also arranged within the garden, offering a glimpse into his daily life. In 2014, a two-story museum opened, exhibiting Kansetsu's works and collection. Discover Kansetsu's art, life, and the unique world of Hakusasonso through his artwork. The second floor of the museum offers panoramic views of the garden and Daimonjiyama mountain. Hakusasonso is a tranquil oasis where traditional Japanese beauty and modern art harmoniously coexist. Spend a relaxing time amidst the ever-changing scenery throughout the four seasons.
