A museum where you can enjoy a historic building and a beautiful Japanese garden.
The Osaka Municipal Museum of Art is a historicist architectural masterpiece opened in 1936 (Showa 11). Designed by architects Kin-go Tatsuno and Yasushi Kataoka, who were also behind Osaka City Hall and Osaka Central Public Hall, its imposing red-brick structure stands gracefully within the lush greenery of Tennoji Park. The museum houses a vast collection of Japanese and East Asian art. Its holdings of Chinese calligraphy and paintings, Chinese stone sculptures, metalwork and ceramics, and Japanese Buddhist art are particularly noteworthy, offering a rich immersion in history and art. Adjacent to the museum lies Keizeien Garden, a stroll garden designed as the garden of the Sumitomo family's main residence. Completed in 1918 (Taisho 7), it was named by Prince Sadaatsu Fushimi. Surrounding a pond with three islands, it features famous stones and trees collected from across Japan, and blooms with seasonal flowers. A stroll through the garden offers a tranquil escape from the urban bustle. The Osaka Municipal Museum of Art provides a comforting space where history, art, and nature harmoniously coexist. In the heart of the city, you can immerse yourself in rich culture and find beauty in the quiet contemplation—a truly special experience.
