Minatogawa Shrine is located in Chuo-ku, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture. It enshrines Lord Kusunoki Masashige, who died in the Battle of Minatogawa at the end of the Sengoku period. Masashige is known for his unwavering loyalty to Emperor Go-Daigo and his resistance against the Kamakura Shogunate. The Battle of Minatogawa is famous for Masashige's valiant, albeit ultimately unsuccessful, stand against the overwhelming forces of Kitabatake Akie's army. Masashige, a warrior of the Southern Court faction opposing the Kamakura Shogunate, fought alongside Emperor Go-Daigo. However, he was defeated at the Battle of Minatogawa by Kitabatake Akie's army and died at the young age of 39. His death dealt a significant blow to the Southern Court, weakening their power significantly. Minatogawa Shrine was established to commemorate Masashige's loyalty and bravery, and to carry on his spirit. Within the shrine grounds, you'll find Masashige's heirlooms and paintings depicting the battle. In addition, the shrine is beautiful throughout the year; cherry blossoms bloom in spring, and the autumn leaves create a stunning display, attracting many visitors.
