In autumn, the Shichimen-sou plants turn a vibrant red, creating a breathtaking spectacle often described as the "autumn leaves of the sea." This magnificent landscape captivates all who visit.
The Higashiyoga Coast Shichimen-sou colony is located in Higashiyoga-machi, Saga City, Saga Prefecture. It's a vast colony of Shichimen-sou, a halophyte that thrives in the extensive tidal flats of the Ariake Sea. Shichimen-sou is an annual plant of the Amaranthaceae family, growing to a height of 20 to 40 centimeters. Its leaves branch out in a unique club-shaped pattern. This remarkable plant survives in a challenging environment, submerged during high tide and exposed during low tide. In autumn, its green leaves transform into a vibrant reddish-purple, a striking characteristic of the species. The best time to view the vibrant display at Higashiyoga Coast is from late October to early November, when the entire area is bathed in a sea of red. This spectacular scene, often compared to autumn leaves reflected in the sea, captivates visitors with its breathtaking beauty. Even Emperor Showa, during his visit to the Ariake Sea, showed great interest in its unique properties and beautiful reddish-purple color. Incidentally, the name "Shichimen-sou" (七面草) translates to "seven-faced plant." This is believed to stem from the leaves' tendency to grow in many directions, reminiscent of a seven-faced Buddha. The Higashiyoga Coast Shichimen-sou colony is a valuable site where you can experience the rich natural environment and ever-changing landscape of the Ariake Sea. Nearby is the Hikata Yoka Park, featuring playground equipment, a lawn area, and an observation deck. It's a perfect destination for families, so please come and visit.
