Overview

Ryugu Shrine is located on Nagasaki-hana cape, at the southern tip of the Satsuma Peninsula in Ibusuki City, Kagoshima Prefecture. It enshrines Toyo-tamahime (Otohime), and is said to be where Urashima Tarou and Otohime met. This shrine has a long history of being a place of worship. While its founding date is unknown, it is believed to have existed at least since the Edo period. The greatest charm of Ryugu Shrine is its location. You can see the vast blue sea and sky stretching out before you, and the majestic Kaimondake volcano in the distance. The sunset views, in particular, are breathtaking, with the crimson sky and sea creating a stunning spectacle. Ryugu Shrine has a unique custom of offering "e-gai" (painted shells) instead of ema (wooden prayer plaques). Visitors write their wishes on seashells and offer them to the shrine. These e-gai are placed in a special box within the shrine grounds. Ryugu Shrine is also known as a god of "enmusubi" (marriage/relationship blessings). The legend of Urashima Tarou and Otohime meeting here is said to bring good fortune for romantic relationships and marital harmony. It is also said to offer blessings for safe voyages and protection from misfortune. Ryugu Shrine is enveloped in a calm and peaceful atmosphere, allowing visitors to forget the daily hustle and bustle and relax. Be sure to visit Ryugu Shrine and experience its romantic atmosphere.
